Sharyland detonates early, cruises into area round 56-7 over porter
MISSION — Sharyland turned a Bi-District game into a track meet, unloading 42 first-half points and rolling past Brownsville Porter 56–7 Thursday at Rattler Stadium.
Senior QB Calvin Harris was surgical: 9-of-10, 275 yards, 3 TDs before halftime, plus a 10-yard rushing score. He hit Bruno Cavazos for a pair of 45-yard TDs, found Abram Carrasco for 65, and later connected with Sebastian Martinez on a 73-yard catch-and-go with 3:41 left in the second quarter to make it 35–0. Oscar Cantu tacked on a 29-yard burst just before the break for 42–0 and 469 first-half yards.
“We’ve been working on that connection since eighth grade,” Cavazos said of the verticals with Harris. “Everything clicked because we kept a strong mindset and stayed together as a team.”
The avalanche continued after halftime as senior Angel Ramirez punched in two third-quarter TDs (10, 20). Sharyland’s offense scored on every possession with the starters on the field; the defense pitched a shutout through three quarters, strangling Porter’s run game and rallying to the ball.
“Nonstop, relentless force—that’s what our defense wanted to be,” senior DL Giovanni Pizzi (99) said. “Great attitude, great coaches pushing us. We just have to keep that same attitude going.”
Porter’s lone score came on a tough Edgar Lopez keeper late in the fourth.
Sharyland (8–3, 4 straight wins) advances to the area round, likely vs. Gregory-Portland (TBA). “Nothing’s granted,” Cavazos said. “We’ll put our heads down and work every day.”
