RGV Week 7 roundup: Rowe rolls, Economedes rallies as district races take shape

Week 7 produced plenty of movement across the Rio Grande Valley as district races began to take shape — and in some cases became even harder to predict.

Rowe shuts down Palmview

Rowe bounced back from its loss to McAllen with its most complete performance of the season, shutting out Palmview 33-0.

The Warriors’ defense pressured Palmview throughout the night, finishing with four sacks and two interceptions while recording its first shutout of the season. Rowe’s offense added three touchdown passes as the Warriors improved to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in district. Palmview also sits at 3-3 and 2-1 after suffering its first district loss.

The result keeps Rowe firmly involved behind unbeaten McAllen in the District 16-5A Division I race.

McAllen keeps rolling

McAllen remained unbeaten with a 63-16 win over Rio Grande City.

The Bulldogs improved to 6-0 and continue to set the pace in District 16-5A Division I. They have now beaten McAllen Memorial, Rowe and Rio Grande City in district play, with Palmview up next Friday.

Economedes rallies past Edinburg

Economedes delivered one of the week’s more surprising results with a 36-32 win over Edinburg.

The Bobcats jumped ahead 15-0 in the first quarter and still led 18-15 at halftime, but the Jaguars turned the game around after the break. Economedes built a 29-18 lead before Edinburg rallied to move back in front 32-29 with 8:52 remaining.

The Jaguars answered one final time, scoring the go-ahead touchdown with 4:50 left before stopping Edinburg on its final possession. Economedes improved to 2-4, while Edinburg fell to 4-2 after its second straight loss.

Jayden Ramirez rushed for 107 yards and three touchdowns for Economedes.

Pioneer gets caught by Cigarroa

Pioneer’s district race took an unexpected turn with a 13-10 loss to Cigarroa.

The Diamondbacks had opened district play with a 40-6 win over Juarez-Lincoln but were held to their lowest scoring output of the season Friday. Pioneer dropped to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in district.

Juarez-Lincoln, meanwhile, picked up its first district victory with a 24-9 win over PSJA Southwest.

Mission breaks through

Mission picked up its first victory of the season in convincing fashion, defeating Donna North 56-7.

The Eagles improved to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in district after entering the week still searching for their first win. Mission now heads to McAllen Memorial on Thursday.
