Rattlers Storm Back from 13 Down to defeat Alice 32–31
SHARYLAND — The Sharyland Rattlers flipped a 13-point second-half deficit into a thrilling 32–31 victory over the Alice Coyotes on Thursday night at Richard Thompson Stadium, earning their first district win in dramatic fashion.
Sharyland opened the scoring with a safety when Luis Mireles and Giovanni Pizzi collapsed the pocket to bring down the Alice quarterback in the end zone. The Coyotes answered quickly, turning a pair of early interceptions into points behind a short touchdown run from Sebastian Flores and a scoring pass from Gilbert Trevino to Maddex Carrillo for a 14–2 lead. A field goal later extended it to 17–2 midway through the second quarter.
The Rattlers steadied themselves before halftime. Quarterback Calvin Harris connected with Sebastian Martinez on a 41-yard strike to pull within striking distance, and David Peterson’s 35-yard field goal trimmed the margin to 17–11 at the break.
Alice opened the third quarter strong as Landon Guerra hauled in a touchdown pass from Trevino to push the Coyotes ahead 24–11. But Sharyland’s running game came alive moments later when junior Kevin Alaniz exploded up the middle for an 87-yard touchdown that reignited the home crowd and shifted momentum back to the Rattlers.
The defense followed suit. Michael Ryan Esquivel, Ezekiel Garza, and Leo Garza helped stall multiple Alice drives before Harris found Oscar Cantu twice in the fourth quarter for touchdown passes, vaulting Sharyland ahead 32–31.
Alice mounted one final drive inside the final minute, but senior safety Bruno Cavazos sealed the win with a leaping interception near midfield as time expired.
With the victory, Sharyland improves to 5–3 overall and 1–1 in district play, snapping a three-game slide and reclaiming momentum ahead of next week’s trip to Roma. Alice falls to 1–7, 0–2, and will look to rebound at home against Mission Veterans.
