McChesney, Prepejchal’s big nights lead Falcons past Mustangs

McALLEN — Los Fresnos quarterback Evan McChesney threw five touchdown passes and two-way player Ryan Prepejchal hauled in three as the Falcons soared past the McAllen Memorial Mustangs 54-20 during a non-district game Friday at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium in McAllen.

The win improves the Falcons to 3-0 on the year, while dropping the Mustangs to 1-2.

McChesney and Prepejchal connected early and often during the first half, with the two hooking up three times to send Los Fresnos into the break with a 35-14 lead.

Their first connection came during the first quarter, with McChesney taking advantage of an offsides by the McAllen Memorial defense and throwing it deep on the free play to Prepejchal for the 69-yard score.

The duo connected twice more to cap a 28-0 run by the Falcons during the second quarter, with the senior signal caller finding Prepejchal for scores of 37- and 38-yards to send Los Fresnos into the break with a 35-14 lead.
“I just trusted my coaches and stayed true to the game plan,” Prepejchal said. “Whenever I saw that wide open field, I just made a play. Shoutout to my quarterback for putting it right in the breadbasket. I just made the play from there and tried to get into the end zone.”

The scoring onslaught continued during the second half, with McChesney taking it in himself to start the third quarter, running it in from three yards out to make it 42-14.

A one-yard touchdown run by McAllen Memorial running back Braxton Speights ended Los Fresnos’ scoring streak, but the Falcons answered with back-to-back fourth quarter touchdowns to take home a 54-20 win.

McChesney accounted for his fifth passing touchdown during that span, a 37-yard strike on a crossing route to Ian Garza. Running back Carlos Hernandez added the Falcons other fourth quarter score.

“It feels great,” McChesney said. “We feel we’re a top five team in the RGV. We’re just ready to prepare for the next one.”

McChesney finished the game with 307 yards and five touchdowns through the air, spreading the scores to three different receivers.

Prepejchal led the group with five catches for 173 yards and three scores. Junior Enrique Guerra added six catches for 57 yards and a touchdown, while Garza hauled in two balls for 65 yards and a score.

“I’m extremely blessed to have this opportunity,” McChesney said. “I learned a lot from Robert (Pineda). He’s helped me get to where I am today. With Ryan, we’ve known each other since middle school. I feel like our bond just connects on the field and we just find each other.”

The Mustangs (1-2) enter district play next week with two straight losses. They’ll reset the slate as they take on city rival McAllen High (3-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium to kick of District 16-5A DI play.

Meanwhile, the Falcons (3-0) will look to keep rolling as they take on a Mission Veterans squad fresh off a 26-24 upset of Weslaco High.

“We will definitely go in with a championship mindset,” McChesney said. “We’re going to work hard this week and try to get that dub.”
