Harlingen South Hawks claim gritty 10-7 win over McAllen Memorial Mustangs
HARLINGEN, TEXAS - The Harlingen South Hawks clinched a hard-fought 10-7 victory against the McAllen Memorial Mustangs in a Region IV-5A Division I bi-district contest at Boggus Stadium in Harlingen. This win, the first playoff victory for the Hawks since 2013, marked a significant achievement under third-year head coach Israel Gonzalez. With the victory, Harlingen South improved to an 8-3 overall record and advanced to the area round, where they will face Victoria West.
The defensive clash between the run-heavy Hawks and Mustangs showcased excellent performances from both teams' punters, effectively pinning each other's offense deep in their territory. The Hawks relied on the rushing capabilities of Alvin Edwards and David Sanchez, with a key moment in the first half when quarterback Austen Shroyer's 77-yard pass to Jacob Cano set up a touchdown from Sanchez.
Jeziel Ovalle's 32-yard field goal, coupled with an interception from South defensive back Joaquin Romero, secured a crucial 10-7 lead late in the third quarter. The Hawks' defensive front, especially the linebackers and safeties, played a pivotal role in containing Memorial's offensive efforts during the second half. Despite a final drive from the Mustangs, a missed 47-yard field goal attempt sealed the Hawks' victory.
Looking ahead, Harlingen South shifts its focus to the area round against Victoria West, with the details of the game yet to be determined. Coach Gonzalez expressed his excitement for the team's progress in the playoffs, emphasizing their ability to achieve goals and move forward in the postseason.
